HONOLULU (AP) — At least 7 fires broke out across Hawaii on the Fourth of July, including burning brush, a Maui home and a pile of scrap metal.
The burning scrap metal pile at Island Recycling on Oahu could take days to put out.
Honolulu Fire Department officials say they found a 40,000-square-foot, 40-foot-tall pile of automobile and other metal parts ablaze. The department’s captain says the cause of the fire has not been determined.
On Maui, fire officials say four people were preparing food inside a single-story Happy Valley home when someone smelled smoke. They discovered that the outside of the house was on fire.
Crews had the flames out in about an hour. No one was injured. Officials say the cause could not be determined.
