Hawaii County Civil Defense will host a public meeting Friday in Hilo for a proposed hazard mitigation plan.

Hawaii County Civil Defense will host a public meeting Friday in Hilo for a proposed hazard mitigation plan.

The meeting is scheduled for 4:30-5:30 p.m. at the county’s Aupuni conference room, 101 Pauahi St., said Troy Scott, project manager.

The plan, updated every five years, covers the county’s mitigation and response efforts for the many natural disasters that could threaten the Big Island, including lava flows, hurricanes, tsunamis and earthquakes.

Scott said the updated plan will be finalized by the end of the summer, and the meeting will provide an opportunity for the public to provide comments and suggestions.

The new version for the first time could address the danger of albizia trees and the potential for a tsunami greater than the ones that devastated Hilo in 1946 and 1960, he said.
