Hilo triathlon on Sunday

Hilo triathlon on Sunday

The 2nd annual Hilo Triathlon — a 1.5 kilometer swim, 40k bike and 10k run — will start at 7 a.m. Sunday at James Kealoha Beach Park.

Hilo’s Chris Gregory is the defending men’s champion, and Keauhou’s Rani Henderson is the defending women’s champion.

Waiakea coach meeting today

There will be a coaches meeting for all Waiakea High coaches (head coaches, assistant coaches and volunteer coaches) at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the school library.

From 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Waiakea/DOE policies and procedures (concussion, and heat awareness training) will be discussed.

From 1 to 3 p.m., Positive Coaching Alliance education will be discussed.

Puna soccer teams play well

Na Hoa O Puna Soccer’s under-17 B team, coached by Vincent La Porta, finished with a 1-1-1 record at the Cerritos tournament in Los Angeles over the Memorial Day weekend.

The U13Bs travelled to Oahu for the HYSA state championships, and finished with a 2-1-1 record. The team tied the Bulls 2-2 and lost to Rush 1-0.

The U8s, U10s, and U12G travelled to Maui for the No ka oi tournament. The U8s and U12s reached the finals and both placed second. The U10s reached the semifinals.

Viking football parent meeting

The Hilo High School football program will hold a mandatory parent meeting on Thursday, July 16 at the school’s cafeteria. All new rookie parents to the program are asked to attend a new parent orientation meeting at 5:30 p.m. The annual meeting will begin promptly at 6 p.m. for all returning parents.

Richardson Roughwater swim

The 28th annual Richardson Roughwater Swim will be held Sunday, July 26, at Richardson Ocean Park. The 1-mile-long race course is designed for strong, experienced swimmers.

Registration by Friday, July 17 will receive a discounted rate of $15. A late entry fee is $25.

Entry forms are available at all county swimming pools and the Aunty Sally Kaleohano Luau Hale at 799 Piilani St.

Honokaa High seeks coaches

Honoka’a High School is accepting applications for varsity head baseball, cross country, cheerleading and wrestling coaching positions.

Applications will be available at the main office during school hours 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Deadline is Friday, July 14.

Igawa 14th at U.S. Amateur qualifier

Andi Igawa, a 2014 Waiakea graduate, tied for 14th with a 13-over 85 at the U.S. Women’s Amateur on Friday at the Poipu Bay Golf Course on Kauai.

The upcoming UH-Hilo sophomore was 14 shots behind medalist Aiko Leong, who fired a 1-under 71. Leong, a Punahou senior, recently tied for second at the HSJGA championships at Waikoloa.
