After receiving a positive recommendation from the Windward Planning Commission, proposed land use changes for Keaau still need to clear a few more hurdles before going into effect.
Daryn Arai, Hawaii County planning program manager, said the proposals need approval from the Leeward Planning Commission, which will consider them Thursday, followed by the County Council.
The Windward Planning Commission voted in favor of the changes, which will designate 587 acres makai of Highway 11 as medium density urban, at its July 2 meeting.
That designation currently is limited to 52 acres of land in the town’s commercial area.
