HONOLULU (AP) — Gov. David Ige vetoed a bill that would have created a victim-centered approach to combating sex trafficking in Hawaii.
Prosecutors say the bill as it is written is confusing. They say it will make catching pimps more difficult, and that state law already prohibits the behavior. Advocates for the bill say they’re disappointed victims of sex trafficking will have to wait for the protection they need.
State law bans human trafficking, but Hawaii is the last in the nation to have a law specifically banning sex trafficking.
Ige says law enforcement leaders will work together to draft a better bill for the next session.
