The public is invited to learn the art of mokuhanga, traditional Japanese woodblock printmaking, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. July 25 at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus.
Mokuhanga is a relief printing technique using Japanese tools and natural materials. The special three-hour presentation will be conducted by well-known painter/printmaker Glenn Masao Yamanoha. Yamanoha will introduce the basic process and give a brief presentation about Ukiyo-e, the history and influence on Western art.
There also will be a hands-on session cutting blocks and printing with a baren (printing pad). Yamanoha studied mokuhanga in Kyoto on a Japanese government scholarship. He teaches woodblock printmaking at Kamana Senior Center in Hilo and has taught design, drawing and painting at Hawaii Community College.
Yamanoha lives in Volcano Village and operates Volcano Gravel. He also will offer more introductory and advanced workshops at later dates.
