For the third consecutive year, Rayna Armour of the Hilo Orchid Society is collaborating with Nita Pilago to create the popular Wahine Toa Designs fashion show and boutique sale at next month’s annual Hilo Orchid Show.
Pilago describes Wahine Toa Designs as “original wearable art inspired by our island living and lifestyles.”
“Our company is a family-run business from my home in Kona,” Pilago said. “All family members contribute their time and energy to help the business thrive.”
The art is drawn by Pilago, her husband, Angel, and sons Kaleo and Che.
“My daughter-in-law, Kate, and all four of my mo opuna (grandkids) help with sales and all aspects of the business,” Pilago said.
The fashion show will start at noon Aug. 8, and the boutique sale of Wahine Toa Designs will follow at 1 p.m. at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
“One of the things that I have always said about the Hilo Orchid Show: It takes a village to put this together,” Armour said. “With food from Hilo Coffee Mill, donations for the silent auction, Wahine Toa fashions, incredible entertainment from the talented musicians in our community and of course the vendors at the show … it doesn’t get much better.”
The 63rd annual show and sale, Orchids Avant-Garde, will take place Aug. 7-9 at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. Admission is $5 general, free for children 12 and younger.
