Police were called to the area over reports of a domestic violence situation at 7:48 p.m. Monday.
When officers arrived they began to talk to area residents, who said there was yelling and shouting at the home.
As officers approached, several people fled from the area.
Then Thromman allegedly opened fire, striking an officer in the right forearm. Police said the officer was in stable condition at North Hawaii Community Hospital Wednesday morning and have not provided an update on his condition.
Thromman’s girlfriend approached officers, saying she had been shot in the outer thigh, according to police. She was taken by ambulance to the same hospital. Details on her health were not available.
Officers evacuated nearby homes and put a perimeter around the residence. They remained there for 20 hours. Officers were called in from their days off or had their overtime extended. They were drawn from across the island to provide traffic control, barricades and support, according to police. Officers were kept hydrated by a periodic visit of an officer bringing soda and water.
The negotiation team of the Special Response Team were in communication with Thromman, according to radio traffic. Tactical members of the team were waiting in and near their van for most of the day Tuesday.
He was arrested after the SRT officers “converged on the scene” at 4:26 p.m. Tuesday.
Police said Thromman fired shots as the officers moved in.
Part of Akoni Pule Highway was closed to nonlocal traffic during the incident. Officers also limited local access for the day, including periodic shutdowns. This led to lines of vehicles waiting to be let through and a number of people heading to Pololu Valley lookout to turn around.
Thromman is being held at the Kona police cellblock pending his initial court appearance in Kona District Court.
