Dr. George David Durham Jr., 90, of Hilo died June 26 at home. Born in Port Arthur, Texas, he was a retired professor of music and former music chairman at University of Hawaii at Hilo, former band director at Hilo High School, former member of “The President’s Own” Marine Band in Washington, D.C., former tubist with the Hawaii County Band, founder of the Kanda Bayashi Hozonkai (Kanda Myojin) in Tokyo, and retired U.S. Marine Corps World War II veteran who served at Iwo Jima.
