LIHUE, Kauai (AP) — A brush fire burned 40 acres behind the Lihue Airport after an all-day blaze.
Plumes of smoke were visible for miles Saturday. A county news release says the fire raged from 8:20 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., though firefighters managed contain it for about an hour in the early afternoon.
Some crews remained on the scene Saturday evening to help prevent flare-ups.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
Kauai County firefighters from the Kapaa, Lihue and Kalaheo stations jointed state firefighters to fight the blaze. State public works and transportation officials also helped contain the fire by creating firebreaks.
