Public warned of water bill scam
The Department of Water Supply is alerting the public about reports of individuals claiming to be from the department.
The individuals call Water Supply customers and threaten to shut off water service because of a past-due water bill.
The DWS is informing the public that these calls are fraudulent and an attempt to receive payment over the phone. The public is advised to report such calls to the Police Department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311 or the DWS Office at 961-8050.
Discovery center to reopen Friday
The Mokupapapa Discovery Center at 76 Kamehameha Ave. in Hilo will be closed today through Thursday for facility maintenance.
The center will reopen Friday. Mokupapapa staff apologize for the inconvenience.
Waiakea High schedules ready
Waiakea High School’s schedule pickup is 9 a.m.-1 p.m. today in front of the registrar’s office at the campus, 155 W. Kawili St. in Hilo.
Payments also will be accepted at this time for student fees:
• $25 student fee for all grade levels in classroom B-102.
• Lunch account (any amount can be deposited) in B-101.
• Optional yearbook fee $50 ($5 extra for name engraving) in D-201.
Separate payments are requested and cash is preferred. Student ID pictures will be taken in the main office for freshmen and new students. Retakes are $3.
Campus tour guides, student credit union and PTSA information/sign-up also will be available.
The start of school is July 29 for freshmen only, and July 30 for all students.

Hilo Daijingu
to host festival
Hilo Daijingu will host its first Natsu Matsuri (summer festival) and Bon Dance from 7-10 p.m. Friday at its activity center. Everyone is welcome.
Before the bon dance, a Mitama-Matsuri memorial service will be observed in the shrine at 6 p.m. This service honors deceased ancestors and loved ones. The concession will be open from 6-10 p.m., featuring local favorites such as andagi, spam musubi, homemade baked goods, ice cake and more.
Puna Taiko will make a special appearance at this community event. Hilo Daijingu towels will be available as well.
