During the week of July 13-19, Hawaii Island police arrested 16 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, six; South Hilo, five; South Kohala, three; and Puna, two.
So far this year, there have been 549 DUI arrests compared to 663 during the same period last year, a decrease of 17.2 percent.
There have been 819 major accidents so far this year compared to 871 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6 percent.
So far this year, there have been 14 official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to eight during the same period last year, an increase of 75 percent.
To date, eight of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — five to drugs and three to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
