Artisan June Hirano will present two classes on sashiko, the Japanese sewing method of artfully stitching together layers of fabric, from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday and Sunday at the Hawaii Japanese Center.
The introductory Sashiko I class will be offered Saturday and Sashiko II will take place Sunday.
Hirano’s interest in Asian and Pacific Island cultures was nurtured by her more than 30 years at the East-West Center. She was exposed to “simple style” sashiko at a workshop conducted by Hisako Hagiwara while on one of Temari’s Folk Arts Tours of Japan.
Hirano’s teaching today reflects her own contemporary perspectives on sashiko, which she also teaches on Oahu at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii and the Honolulu Museum of Art.
Hirano’s travel to Hilo is funded by the Joyce Wright Visiting Artists Program of Temari, Center for Asian and Pacific Arts, in partnership with the Hawaii Japanese Center.
There is a class fee of $45, plus a supply fee of $10 for the Sashiko I class that covers design instructions, sashiko needle, imported sashiko threads, other types of threads and practice fabrics.
