HONOLULU (AP) — A Honolulu City Council committee has approved a settlement in a lawsuit filed by a Waipahu man who claims he was beaten by an off-duty police officer.
Justin Kaawa filed the lawsuit against the city after the April 2011 incident. The city council’s Executive Matters and Legal Affairs committee approved an undisclosed amount to Kaawa Tuesday.
Kaawa claims an off-duty police officer dragged him from his vehicle near the Makakilo on-ramp to the H-1 Freeway and started to punch him and spray him with Mace.
The settlement is expected to be approved by the full council at an upcoming meeting.
The Hawaii Police Department didn’t comment on the settlement, but they’ve confirmed that the officer in the case remains on the force.
