The access road to the Laupahoehoe Small Boat Harbor will remain closed for the duration of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ $2.5 million breakwater repair project.
The project’s contractor, American Marine Corp., will restrict vehicular access to the harbor and construction site via physical barricades. When construction operations permit, limited pedestrian access will be allowed to portions of the harbor outside the active construction area.
The county Department of Parks and Recreation announced the immediate closure last week.
The breakwater repair project is scheduled to be completed in February.
The public is reminded to observe and follow all posted signs and that use of the boat ramp for ocean access and swimming is prohibited.
Joseph Bonfiglio, a spokesman for the Army Corps, previously told the Tribune-Herald the project will include rehabilitating and repairing the existing breakwater and wave absorber, and will require grouting of the breakwater centerline and repairing of dislodged armor stones.
Before work begins, the contractor will have to install a temporary bridge over the existing county bridge leading to Laupahoehoe Point, which will support the weight of the construction equipment and materials.
