Two Hawaii Island students were among the winners of AlohaCare’s 13th annual Children’s Art Contest.

Reesha Nakano of Haili Christian School in Hilo took third place in the third- and fourth-grade category, and Zaylie Gentry of Waimea Middle School placed third among fifth- and sixth-graders. AlohaCare also congratulates the teachers of each student, Lorene Olson (Nakano) and Kara Onaka (Gentry).

This year, AlohaCare gave away more than $2,000 in prize money to students and teachers. The first-, second- and third-place winners in each of the four categories received $100, $75 and $50, respectively.

The art contest was open to students statewide in four categories by school grade: kindergarten, first and second grade, third and fourth grade, and fifth and sixth grade. The students submitted drawings based on one of four health-related topics: preventive health, mental health, nutrition or physical activities.

“AlohaCare is committed to improving the health and wellness of communities across our state,” said president and CEO John McComas. “This contest provided a way for young students to learn about health and wellness, represent their school and win cash prizes for themselves and their teachers.”

The drawings will be featured in AlohaCare’s 2016 calendar, to be released later this year.
