Two public meetings are scheduled to discuss updated preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps for Hawaii County.

These maps are designed to help residents make decisions about flood insurance options and flood protection measures. Personnel from FEMA, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources and Hawaii County will be available to answer questions and provide information.

The meetings are Aug. 17 at Aupuni Center, 101 Pauahi St. in Hilo, and Aug. 18 at West Hawaii Civic Center, 75-5044 Ane Keohokalole Highway, Building G, in Kailua-Kona. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., with presentations from 6-7 p.m..

The maps will be available for viewing beginning Aug. 14 at the county Department of Public Works Engineering offices in Hilo and Kona. They also will be available for online viewing on the state Flood Hazard Assessment Tool at http://gis.hawaiinfip.org/fhat.
