WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — A pygmy sperm whale was found dead on Keawakapu Beach on Maui.
The whale was found Wednesday morning. By the time National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Marine Mammal Response Network arrived the animal was dead.
While it is called a pygmy whale, the adult whale was 985 pounds.
A necropsy Wednesday night shows there were no signs of disease, but there was a fracture near the whales jaw area.
NOAA spokesman David Schofield says they could not determine the cause of the fracture or if the whale’s death was caused by the fracture.
Before the animal was taken to Hawaii Pacific University for the necropsy, Schofield says a Hawaiian cultural practitioner was called to perform a blessing over the whale.
