WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — A Maui-based outreach organization is proposing to build a campground facility in Lahaina as a way to help the island’s growing homeless population but residents are fighting the project.
The Hoomoana Foundation will meet today with the Maui Planning Commission to discuss a permit for the Kauaula Campgrounds project.
The project would provide eight camp sites on about 2 acres along Hokiokio Place adjacent to the Lahaina Bypass.
Neighbors call the proposal a “tent city” that would deter tourists from West Maui, lower property values and attract crime.
