During the week of July 20-26, Hawaii Island police arrested 27 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Eleven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were younger than 21.

During the week of July 20-26, Hawaii Island police arrested 27 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Eleven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 14; Puna and South Hilo, five each; and South Kohala, three.

So far this year, there have been 576 DUI arrests compared with 680 during the same period last year, a decrease of 15.3 percent.

There have been 858 major accidents so far this year compared to 901 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.8 percent.

So far this year, there have been 13 official traffic fatalities compared with eight during the same period last year, an increase of 62.5 percent. (A fatality July 18 was reclassified to a medical condition).

To date, eight of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — five to drugs and three to a combination of drugs and alcohol.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
