HONOLULU (AP) — The State Sheriff and a top deputy have been suspended without pay after an investigation into a DUI case involving another deputy in 2013.
State Sheriff Robin Nagamine confirmed his suspension Monday, he says he plans to appeal the decision.
The Department of Public Safety said in a statement that Nagamine and First Deputy Patrick Lee are on unspecified leave. The department will not say how long the suspensions will last.
The disciplinary action is about the arrest of Sheriff Patrick Lewis in 2013. He was charged with DUI and had his license suspended after he had an accident involving a state vehicle. His criminal charges were later dismissed.
