HONOLULU (AP) — A group of affordable housing advocates in Hawaii is calling on city and state leaders to take action on homelessness.
They rallied Tuesday outside Honolulu City Hall to ask officials to make affordable housing a top priority.
Gov. David Ige recently convened a task force to work on solutions to the issue of homelessness in the state. He says the group identified sites to expand shelter options.
Rev. David Gierlach of St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church is helping organize the Housing Now campaign, which is made up of various groups. He says the government hasn’t committed enough resources to reduce the state’s housing shortfall so every family has a place to call home.
The group plans to deliver letters to elected officials with recommendations to solve the problems.
