HONOLULU (AP) — The state Department of Health is urging Wahiawa residents to protect themselves against smoke from wildfires that have burned several hundred acres of forest reserve.
The department on Tuesday recommended that people with respiratory conditions stay inside, close windows and doors and make sure air conditioners are working properly.
Four schools cancelled classes because of the fire: Iliahi Elementary, Leilehua High, Wahiawa Elementary and Wahiawa Middle.
Eight helicopters are dropping water on the blaze from the air.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources says the fire is scorching rare native ohia and koa trees and uluhe fern. It’s also burning non-native eucalyptus.
Honolulu Fire Department Capt. David Jenkins says the blaze burned nearly 475 acres as of late Monday. The fire was 10 percent contained.
