During the week of July 27-Aug. 2, police arrested 23 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Ten of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, nine; Puna and Kona, six each; Ka‘u and South Kohala, one each.
So far this year, there have been 599 DUI arrests compared to 713 during the same period last year, a decrease of 16 percent.
There have been 877 major accidents so far this year compared to 932 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.9 percent.
So far this year, there have been 14 official traffic fatalities compared to eight during the same period last year, an increase of 62.5 percent.
To date, eight of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — five to drugs and three to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
