The Hawaii Island United Way board of directors announced that Bettye Williams was selected to lead the operations of the organization as president and chief professional officer.
“Ms. Williams comes with many years of experience in the not-for-profit arena, and we selected her after reviewing many qualified applicants,” said board chairwoman Ann Ebesuno. “We look forward to working with her.”
Williams previously was Hawaii County operations director for Goodwill Industries of Hawaii and served as chief executive officer of Maui Family Support Services. She has worked for other nonprofits on Maui and the mainland, including United Way of Central Maryland.
A Hawaii resident for more than three decades, Williams also is president of the Rotary Club of Hilo Bay for 2015-16.
“I am excited about making a difference as Hawaii Island United Way’s president and chief professional officer,” Williams said. “It is a tremendous platform for partnering with our community. I believe by living united and living aloha, we can accomplish anything.”
Williams has begun her transition by working with outgoing president and chief professional officer Jeanine Atebara.
Since 1967, Hawaii Island United Way has been an efficient, effective fundraiser for local nonprofits. Its mission is to unite people, organizations and resources to build a healthier community through partner agencies. Hawaii Island United Way currently supports 48 programs at 38 organizations.
