The latest forecast for Hurricane Hilda has it nearing the Big Island as a tropical storm later this week as it approaches South Point.
As of 11 a.m., the National Weather Service said Hilda was moving west to northwest at 8 mph with maximum sustained winds near 90 mph.
It’s forecast to be a tropical storm as of 8 a.m. Thursday as it nears landfall over the isle’s most southern point, though it will weaken further to a tropical depression within the following 24 hours. The update has it tracking slightly more to the south than the earlier forecast.
The system could cause heavy surf over the next couple days.
