Wailoa Center exhibits open
Wailoa Center is presenting two exhibits, “Collaborations 2,” 52 works of collaborative art by close to 80 artists in the Main Gallery, and the photography of local, award-winning photographer Joseph Ruesing titled “Strange Angels” in the Fountain Gallery.
The sponsor of this year’s exhibits, on display through Aug. 27, is the newly formed nonprofit Hawaii Island Art Alliance.
The Wailor Center exhibits are free and open to the public from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and closed Saturday, Sunday and state holidays.

HPA welcomes head of school
Hawaii Preparatory Academy kicked off the 2015-16 school year Friday with the installation of new head of school Robert McKendry.
The installation ceremony was performed at HPA’s Davies Chapel.
Kumu Kuwalu Anakalea offered an opening chant, the Rev. Diana Akiyama presided and Gregory R. Mooers, HPA board of trustees chairman, commissioned McKendry as HPA’s 11th head of school.
HPA students in grades 6-12 return to school Aug. 18. Students in grades K-5 return to Aug. 19.
Libraries closed Statehood Day
All public libraries will be closed in observance of Statehood Day on Friday, Aug. 21.

Holiday choir meeting Sept. 8
The Volcano Festival Chorus, sponsored by the Kilauea Drama and Entertainment Network, has been a holiday staple for years and is gathering for another season.
Anyone interested in joining a holiday choir is invited to the group’s organizational meeting at 7 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Volcano School of Arts &Sciences, Keakealani (middle school) campus.
Rehearsals are on Tuesdays and performances will take place in early December.
