State to select partner for Maui hospitals by end September
WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — Hospital and state administrators expect to select either Kaiser Permanente Hawaii or Hawaii Pacific Health as a partner for Maui County’s three public hospitals by the end of September.
Gov. David Ige said during a public forum Tuesday that the partnership hopes to deliver higher quality health care on the island.
Ige signed a bill into law in June that clears the way for a possible takeover of Maui Memorial Medical Center, Kula Hospital & Clinic and Lanai Community Hospital by a private partner. The bill tasks Ige with leading negotiations for the transition.
Kaiser and Hawaii Pacific are the only two companies that have expressed interest in partnering with the Maui region of Hawaii Health Systems Corp.
Hawaii Pacific University, Hooters file sue each other
HONOLULU (AP) — Two lawsuits have been filed over Hawaii Pacific University’s relocation into Aloha Tower Marketplace.
HPU announced a lawsuit against Hooters for not paying its portion of rent and failing to fix a faulty exhaust system. Hooters fired back, filing a lawsuit against the university for breach of contract.
According to HPU’s claim, Hooters is in default of the lease as of July 22 for failing to pay rent and other charges, owing more than $31,400. The complaint also says Hooters is in breach of contract for not repairing an exhaust system that has been broken since September.
Hooters claims HPU entered a contract ensuring that the recent construction at Aloha Tower Marketplace to install an education center and dorm rooms would not affect business, but that it did.
Man with gun steals OxyContin pills from Makawao pharmacy
MAKAWAO, Maui (AP) — Maui police say a man with a gun stole OxyContin pills from the Makawao Town Pharmacy.
Police say a man wearing a hooded jacket and a bandanna over his face brandished a black pistol Tuesday afternoon before running out of the pharmacy with an undetermined amount of pills.
A woman who answered the phone Wednesday at the small, family-owned business referred questions about the robbery to her grandfather, who owns the store. He couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
Police are searching for the suspect. The hooded jacket was found near the pharmacy.
In February, police said a man with a gun jumped over the counter of a Longs Drugs pharmacy in Kula, pointed the weapon at a pharmacist and stole more than 1,000 pills of the powerful painkiller.
