Housing needed
During the last few weeks, there has been much talk about the growing homeless population in Hawaii and the need for action to address this problem.
Meanwhile, Hawaii County officially placed a moratorium on the Section 8 housing program, which already had a five-year wait.
We can spend $17 million on renovating Hilo Municipal Golf Course and several million more on an ill-conceived roundabout in Pahoa.
Why are we not building low-income housing instead?

TMT on Mount Fuji?
Ms. Arlene Buklarewicz’s letter of Aug. 13 assumes the Japanese gladly would welcome and revere the 18-story Thirty Meter Telescope on their sacred Mount Fuji.
I don’t think so, but I would invite her to enlist the help of TMT-backer and KTA executive Barry Taniguchi to promote Mount Fuji as a TMT site alternative to Mauna Kea.
Good luck.
Please report back on the Japanese response.

Nature before science
I live on Moku o Keawe (have for 40 years) and on Oahu before that, so I’ve been here most of my life working as an educator.
I love Hawaii and all things Hawaiian. This land is our life, and the culture provides the sacred foundation for these islands we MUST ALL RESPECT!
That huge telescope will harm this mountain more than it is worth. Listen to these folks. I am not of the blood, AND I am of the heart.
Pay attention to Hawaiians to preserve this land. Say no to the Thirty Meter Telescope. The mountain is for us all — not foreign science.
Yes, I believe in science, but not at the cost of nature.

Aloha-less driver
To whoever ran into my white Chevrolet Uplander van Aug. 3 in Pahoa and did not even leave a note: Look up the definition of aloha, and if you can’t get it, get help or get out of Hawaii.
We do not need your kind here.
If you were driving illegally, that is even worse. Don’t forget karma.
