Lady Vuls picked

to finish eighth

Coming off a season marked by its abundance of draws, Pacific Conference West coaches don’t expect UH-Hilo to add many more victories.

The Vulcans were selected Tuesday to finish eighth in the 14-team preseason poll.

UH-Hilo finished 7-5-6 and were 4-4-4 in conference.

Point Loma was selected to repeat, garnering 11 of 14 first-place votes.

The Vulcans open the season Sept. 10 at home against Simon Fraser.

Hilo soccer

registration

The Hilo High Viking girls soccer team will have a tryout registration meeting at 5 p.m. Aug. 25, and a parent and a student are asked to attend.

If a student is unable to attend due to a fall sport, her parent is asked to attend.

The meeting will discuss the mandatory tryouts, conditioning, preseason tournaments and the upcoming season.

Each student-athlete is required to have a sports physical completed before the tryouts. Soccer shoes, shin guards and running shoes are required for practices.

For more information, email cechong1@gmail.com to reserve a tryout packet and contact Curtis Chong (756-1621) for more information.

Bieni 5K Fun Run at HPA

Runners, walkers, canines and families are invited to participate in the Fifth Bieni 5K Fun Run and Dog Walk beginning at 9 a.m. Sept. 20 at the Hawaii Preparatory Academy cross-country course. The course — located at the school’s upper campus — is a challenging, but fun and that includes hills, flats, grass and pavement.

Participants who preregister online by Sept. 8 will receive a race shirt and goodie bag. To register, visit: flpregister.com/154. Entry fees are $25 for participants 11 and older and $35 for those 11 and older with dogs.

This fun community event honors Bieni Kohler-Johnson, an HPA alumna who passed away in 2009 after a battle against breast cancer. Net proceeds from the event fund the annual Bieni Kohler-Johnson ’83 Scholarship at HPA, given to young women who are gifted in athletics, academics or the arts.

The top fundraiser will receive a two-night stay at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel.
