Darryl Oliveira, Hawaii County Civil Defense administrator, said the closure began about 10 a.m. and no detour is available. It wasn’t clear when the highway will reopen.
The Big Island remains under a mix of flooding advisories and warnings as of 10:45 a.m.
A flood advisory is expected to expire at 11:45 a.m. while a flash flood warning is scheduled to lapse at 2 p.m. unless extended. A flash flood watch will remain in effect until 6 p.m.
Other roads closed due to flooding late Sunday are now open. Those include Kohala Mountain Road and Highway 190 between the 6 and 9 mile markers.
