Hilo badminton event Sept. 4-5
Featuring badminton players from the Big Island, Oahu, Japan and California, the 42nd annual Hilo Open will be held Sept. 4-5 at Hilo Armory.
Registration divisions are open, A, B, C, D, single and mixed, junior, adult, and various senior levels in men’s and women’s divisions.
This year’s tournament is dedicated to Hilo cardiologist, Dr. Djon Lim, who recently passed away.
Among the players traveling from Japan to play in the honor of Dr. Lim, is Michael Tsutsumi, a former Hilo resident and one of the many players to be trained by Lim.

Sports Hall still taking nominees
The Big Island Sports Hall of Fame is extending its nomination process, and all applications should be postmarked no later than Aug. 28.
Criteria for nominations are at least 20 years of volunteer involvement in athletics, either as a coach, teacher or mentor.
Nominators are asked to send a two-page write-up of the nominee’s background, accomplishments and contributions to the community, along with an 8-by-10 inch color photo, and the the nominator’s name, phone number and/or email address.

Larry Manliguis scholarships
Athletes for Life, Inc., is accepting applications for two Larry Manliguis scholarships.
One $300 scholarship (donated by Athletes for Life, Inc.) will be given to a graduate of any Big Island school, and the other is sponsored by the Hilo High class of 1960 and will be given to a Vikings graduate.
To qualify, applicants must have: 1. graduated in 2015; 2. participated in at least one sport during their senior year; 3.minimum 2.5 GPA during their senior year; 4. plan on furthering their education; 5. write a one-page essay on how sports have impacted their life and how they will give back to their community through athletics.
