HONOLULU (AP) — Vandals began to cut through a Hawaiian Telcom cable in Moanalua but abandoned their plan, possibly because of electric shock.
The cut triggered alarms at the company’s Network Operations Center at about 11 p.m. Thursday. The partially severed high voltage cable was in a manhole off a bike path. The people who cut it might have been attempting to steal copper.
Hawaiian Telcom’s copper has been stolen twice this summer in the same area in Kalihi.
About 25 customers reported disruptions in service by Friday afternoon.
