Konawaena girls headed to D.C.

Konawaena girls headed to D.C.

Hawaii’s defending girls basketball champion is headed to Washington D.C.

The Konawaena Wildcats, who have won six state titles in the past dozen years, are one of 48 teams across the nation that have been invited to participate in the Title IX Tournament and Conference to be held Dec. 27-30 at the D.C. Armory in the nation’s capital.

According to a release, “the three-day tournament widens opportunities for female student-athletes as teams with highly recruited players compete against local talent before a wide range of coaches and scouts seeking to award scholarships — scholarships made possible because of the passage of Title IX.”

Konawaena returns a strong lineup of six returnees – including Chanelle Molina, the state’s top player – who were part of the team that defeated Lahainaluna of Maui 51-41 to win the HHSAA state tournament in March.

The team is seeking a title sponsor, and if one cannot be identified, Konawaena hopes to seek smaller donations by businesses and individuals who have supported the program in the past.

For more information, call coach Bobby Awa (896-6433), Bill Trumbo at (936-5708) or Bobby Command (895-2416.)
