The Hawaii Craftsmen 48th annual Statewide Juried Exhibition is Oct 27-Nov. 20 at the Honolulu Museum of Art School.
Emerging and established artists residing in Hawaii are invited to enter traditional or nontraditional crafts with a fresh approach or point of view. The exhibition is open to functional and nonfunctional 2-D and 3-D art in categories of clay, fiber, glass, wood, metal, stone and mixed media.
Juror-selected cash awards will be presented during the Honolulu opening reception Oct. 27. This year’s juror is Dr. Lowery Stokes Sims, curator emerita of the Museum of Art and Design in New York.
Each year Hawaii Craftsmen honors three statewide members as invited artists who represent various media with their excellent work and who have contributed to the Hawaii art community at large. This year, the board of directors selected Volcano Village glass artist Michael Mortara of 2400 Fahrenheit studio.
Mortara and his wife, Misato, have been making glass together for more than 20 years. Originally from Oahu, they opened their studio in Volcano in 2000. Their work is found in private collections worldwide as well as the collections of the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, the Contemporary Museum of Honolulu, Four Seasons and Hilton hotels and the National Park Service.
Sept. 15 is the closing date for online entry registration for the October show. No mail-in or intake/jurying day entries accepted. All artists are required to enter online through www.callforentry.org.
All Big Island entries will be physically viewed by the juror Oct. 18 at Hilo’s Hawaii Museum of Contemporary Art. Intake is 10 a.m.-noon; jurying noon-2 p.m.; juror’s lecture 2-2:45 p.m.; and artwork pickup 3-4 p.m.
Selected Big Island entries then are shipped to Oahu by the artist, with delivery no later than Oct. 23. See www.hawaiicraftsmen.org for complete prospectus. For assistance with online entry, email or call Big Island co-chairpersons Patti Pease Johnson, pattij3@hawaiiantel.net, 966-8861, or Evan Jenkins, epj@hawaii.edu, 640-0283.
