The Hilo-based Japanese Community Association of Hawaii is seeking nominations for Japanese cultural treasures, individuals who have made significant contributions to the preservation and perpetuation of Japanese culture and arts in East Hawaii.

The individuals selected will be honored from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Nov. 14 at the “Bunka No Hi” Japanese Culture Day in Hawaii at the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin Sangha Hall.

Since 2003, the Japanese Community Association has honored 44 cultural treasures and Americans of Japanese Ancestry veterans who served with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the 100th Battalion and the Military Intelligence Service during World War II, said Jan Higashi, association president.

Nomination forms are available via email at jcahawaii@yahoo.com, by calling the JCAH office at 969-6437 or by download from the association’s website, www.jcahawaii.org. Deadline for submitting nominations is Sept. 30.

For more information, call Tommy Goya, cultural treasures committee chairman, at 989-5953 or Gayle Kamei at 936-6151.

“Bunka No Hi” is a biennial event sponsored by the association. In keeping with the 2011 and 2013 theme, this year’s event is “Mottainai III.” Mottainai is a Japanese word that means, “no waste” or “reduce, recycle and reuse.”

Other activities planned include an omikoshi parade, a mottainai recycled art contest, food and entertainment.
