During the week of Aug. 17-23, Hawaii Island police arrested 25 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Nine of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 16; South Hilo, five; Puna and South Kohala, two each.
So far this year, there have been 674 DUI arrests compared to 769 during the same period last year, a decrease of 12.4 percent.
There have been 971 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,028 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.5 percent.
So far this year, there have been 15 official traffic fatalities compared to nine during the same period last year, an increase of 66.7 percent.
To date, eight of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — five to drugs and three to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
