There will be no hunting at Pohakuloa Training Area this weekend because of scheduled training, the Army said in a statement Wednesday.

Puna Lions help Pahoa B&G Club

The Puna Lions Club refurbished 42 aluminum chairs from Smith’s Appliance in Hilo that were resold, raising $1,200 that went toward the Pahoa Boys and Girls Club.

Puna Lions scraped, cleaned, painted and resold the patio chairs to purchase sporting goods, arts and craft supplies and games for the Pahoa club.

Rob Tucker’s community forum, punaweb.org, was instrumental in the fundraiser, accounting for more than half the sales. In addition, Puna residents David and Marianne Panoff contributed an air hockey table.

Honokaa Teen Tech Tutors back

Honokaa Teen Tech Tutors is starting its community service for the new school year, from 1-3 p.m. Sept. 5 at the United Methodist Church, 45-3525 Mamane St.

Teens are available every Saturday to answer questions from anyone about how to operate cellphones, iPad, laptop and other electronic communication devices. Learn how to download photos, send email and more. People can drop in with a fully charged device — no registration is required. A donation of $5 is requested to cover expenses.

Hilo’s Chapple earns doctorate

Will Chapple of Hilo recently earned his doctor of medicine degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medical and Public Health.

An estimated 6,700 graduates participated in the university’s commencement exercises.

Three receive HPM scholarships

A Big Island high school graduate and a Hawaii Community College student recently were among the recipients of scholarships from HPM Building Supply to help with college expenses.

For more than 30 years, the annual Barney S. Fujimoto Memorial Scholarship has promoted academic achievement and excellence to Hawaii Island high school seniors planning to attend a University of Hawaii institution. This year’s applications also were made available online for Oahu and Kauai high school seniors.

Maya Kottwitz, a Hawaii Academy of Arts and Sciences graduate who will attend the University of Hawaii at Hilo, received a $1,000 scholarship.

Hawaii Community College student Ronald Dalere was awarded HPM’s Building Future Builders Scholarship of $750.

Applications for the next Barney S. Fujimoto Memorial Scholarship will be available online via the University of Hawaii Common Scholarship Application in January 2016.
