During the week of Aug. 24-30, Hawaii Island police arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

During the week of Aug. 24-30, Hawaii Island police arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 8; South Kohala, 4; South Hilo and Puna, 3 each; and Hamakua, 1.

So far this year, there have been 693 DUI arrests compared to 790 during the same period last year, a decrease of 12.3 percent.

There have been 988 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,056 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.4 percent.

So far this year, there have been 15 official traffic fatalities compared with nine during the same period last year, an increase of 66.7 percent.

To date, nine of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — six to drugs and three, a combination of drugs and alcohol.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
