Trollers, Contractors tourney results
Hilo Trollers and Hawaii Island Contractors Association jointly ran two offshore fishing tournaments on Sunday, Aug. 2.
A number of boats ran in both tournaments. Nine boats entered the Trollers tournament and six caught qualifying fish.
The Grand Champion Award went to captain Eric Baptiste of the Easy Money for catching three of the four flag fish: a 35.6 pound ahi, a 31.9 pound ono and a 39.7 pound mahi mahi.
Baptiste’s ahi and mahi mahi were also the largest fish landed in those categories.
The largest ono was a 36.9 pound fish landed on the Kay L C 5 by captain Aric Okuda and crew. They edged out the Carla H by 3/10ths of a pound.
In the Contractors 16th annual Scholarship Tournament, eight boats entered and four boats caught qualifying fish.
The largest ono was the Kay L C 5’s 36.9 pound ono landed by Kevin Eblacas.
The largest mahi mahi was a 14.2 pound fish land by captain Gil Kuali’i and Leia DeMello on the Honey Girl.
The Trollers and the Contractors along with the Contractor’s cosponsors, Bank of Hawaii and Honsador Lumber, wanted to thank the radio control and the weigh-in crew for running a safe and successful tournament.
Labor Day fishing tourney coming up
The Labor Day and last Hilo Trollers monthly tournament of the season will be held on Labor Day weekend: Saturday and Sunday.
Should small craft advisories be posted prior to the tournament (6 p.m. NOAA forecast on Friday), the tournament will be postponed and will run Sunday and Monday.
Should bad weather persist for both days, the tournament will be canceled, and that will end the 2015 fishing season.
By tradition, the Labor Day Tournament is not carried over to the following weekend.
The Labor Day Tournament requires a different entry form and entry forms are due at one of the supporting shops: S. Tokunaga Store, J Hara Store or Boat House Hawaii by 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3.
The Labor Day tournament usually brings in some big fish, and its results often determine who wins the coveted “Fisherman of the Year” award.
