Dorothy “Mudder” May Barber, 83, of Hilo died Aug. 21 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Syracuse, N.Y., she was a former deputy sheriff. Services held. Survived by sons, Arvin F. Barber of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Michael (Alanna) Barber of Hilo; sister-in-law, Shirley (Jay) Odem of South Carolina; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces and cousins. Jack Tetsuyuki Tagawa, 89, of Hilo died Aug. 19 at home. Born in Wailea, he was a retired state Department of Education accountant, U.S. Army World War II veteran and member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin. Services held. No flowers or koden (monetary gifts). Survived by wife, Eloise Tagawa of Hilo; sons, Darren (Cyd) Tagawa of Hilo and Miles (Kym) Tagawa of Waikoloa; daughters, Maxine (Kevin Ikeda) Millard of Hilo, and Marlene (George) Li of San Jose, Calif.; brothers-in-law, Stanley Kitajima of Honolulu and Dr. Haruto (Dorothy) Yamanouchi of Arizona; six grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
