According to the National Weather Service, the storm was about 570 miles east of Hilo with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph, a category one hurricane, but barely. The storm is moving northwest at about 7 mph. A turn to the west-northwest is expected by early Monday.
Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 25 miles from the storm’s center, and tropical storm winds extend outward up to 205 mph.
Jimena is expected to bring large and powerful surf to east facing shores through the weekend, but no coastal watches or warnings are in effect.
