Hilo-Konawaena meet Monday
Hilo-Konawaena meet Monday
It won’t be at night, but Monday football is coming to the Big Island.
Hilo will play at Konawaena on Monday in a game that was postponed Friday because of inclement weather in Kealakekua. The junior varsity game starts at 2 p.m., with the varsity to follow.
Hilo was originally scheduled to play Thursday night at Kamehameha, but to avoid the quick turnaround, the matchup was pushed back to Saturday in Keaau, with the JV kicking things off at 3 p.m.
Pahoa and Ka’u get the Thursday night spotlight. Their eight-man contest was moved up two days and will be played at 7 p.m. at Keaau’s field.
Also, a Pahoa-Kohala game that was postponed Sept. 5 has been rescheduled for Oct. 31.
UH-Hilo men look for shots
As the UH-Hilo men’s soccer team returns to practice this week, it won’t just be working on trying to score its first goal. Generating shots will also be a focus.
The Vulcans (0-2) got off only six shots in two-match trip to Oahu to open the season.
In a 2-0 loss to Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday, UH-Hilo was outshot 11-4, allowing a goal in each half. The Vulcans couldn’t take advantage of seven corner kicks.
While the men’s team doesn’t play again until Sept. 17, the Lady Vulcans open the season at 12:30 p.m. Thursday against Simon Fraser at the campus baseball field.
• Sophomore Anna Mikkelsen finished 27th in a time of 20 minutes, 28.08 seconds to pace the Vulcans’ women cross-country team at the University of Hawaii’s Big Wave Invitational on Oahu’s North Shore.
Kamehameha graduate Crystal Baysa (21:53.30) placed 45th in the 67-runner field, while Alexandra Bielli (55th, 22:59.05), June Garrett (58th, 23:37.06) and Abigail Mahnke (64th, 26:40.52) also ran for the Vulcans, who were seventh of eight teams.
