The office of U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, continues to accept applications for the annual Schatz Seniors High School Internship Program.

The office of U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, continues to accept applications for the annual Schatz Seniors High School Internship Program.

Now in its third year, the Schatz Seniors program provides a hands-on learning opportunity about the U.S. Senate, creates a forum for students to share issues and information with the senator and his staff, and encourages students to be leaders and advocates in their schools and communities.

Schatz Seniors will work with outreach staff, identify issues of interest in their schools and communities, and attend and staff special events.

“The Schatz Seniors program is an incredible opportunity for our office to work with the future leaders of Hawaii,” Schatz said. “We have interns across the state who are engaged in their communities, and I look forward to working with them every year.”

This is not an office position and students should miss little or no class time in performing program tasks or assignments. The internship runs from October 2015 to April 2016, and interns must commit for the full term.

Public, private, charter and home-schooled seniors can apply. Students must have a GPA of 2.5 or better and have personal access to email throughout the internship. Schatz Seniors will be selected based on their involvement in their community, diversity of interests and life experiences, and demonstrated leadership involvement.

The application is available online at www.schatz.senate.gov and must be completed no later than Sept. 18. For more information, call 523-2061.

Internships for undergraduate and graduate students also are available year-round in the senator’s Washington, D.C., and Honolulu offices. Visit www.schatz.senate.gov for details.
