Halika ipagdiwang!
“Come celebrate” Filipino-American heritage in October at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. A number of cultural and entertaining events are planned in the biggest celebration the Filipino-American Heritage Month Committee has organized in years.
The committee, led by Filipino Studies Certificate program faculty members and staff, has grown with the addition of leaders from the Filipino community and organizations. Student leaders also played crucial roles in the planning process.
All activities will be open to the public to participate and enjoy.
The celebration begins at 9 a.m. Oct. 3 with the traditional Barrio Fiesta at the UH-Hilo Campus Center Plaza.
The fiesta will simulate the mood of a traditional Filipino fiesta celebration with special guests, administration, political leaders, community members, students, faculty and staff who will begin the opening ceremonies in a parade of colorful Filipino costumes and entertainment numbers.
Performances from at least three bands will follow the opening ceremonies.
Traditional Filipino folk games and contests also are scheduled, including the famous “balut” (unhatched fertilized duck egg) eating contest.
In addition, people can enjoy a jeepney ride while touring the landmarks of the UH-Hilo campus.
Of course, there will be booths where food can be purchased during the different events.
All events are free except the Gala Night. Tickets are $40, dinner included.
