HONOLULU (AP) — Weeks of heavy rainfall across Hawaii has helped relieve patches of severe drought on the islands.
A record 1.5 inches of rain fell between Friday night and Saturday morning, turning the barren land on Oahu green.
August brought record-breaking rain totals to Kauai and Maui islands. Honolulu, meanwhile, doubled its record from 3.74 inches in 2004 to this year’s 7.83 inches.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service say the trend might not continue for the rest of 2015.
Senior Forecaster Jon Jelsema said the current El Niño is very strong, and that weather pattern typically causes the islands to dry out.
Jelsema said the rain came with tropical storms, but drought conditions might return this winter.
