Historic Kailua Village welcomes award-winning Hawaiian music entertainer Ku‘uipo Kumukahi to the stage Sunday as part of the monthly Kokua Kailua Village events.

Kokua Kailua begins at 1 p.m. Hilo native Kumukahi will perform on the main stage at Emma’s Square on Alii Drive from 5-6 p.m. Her family’s deep-rooted traditions, knowledge and values are ever present in her music. She is self-taught and influenced by family songs, other Hawaiian singers and her parents.

Kumukahi has garnered Na Hoku Hanohano’s most Promising New Artist Award and other awards, including Female Vocalist of the Year and Traditional Hawaiian Album of the Year. The Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts nominated Kumukahi as its Female Vocalist of the Year in 1999 and she was awarded the Traditional Hawaiian Album of the Year by the Hawaii Music Awards in the same year.

Kumukahi’s mission is to produce, preserve, perpetuate and promote quality in Hawaiian music.

Kumukahi’s performance is a gift to the community from Kailua Village Business Improvement District. Next month’s Kokua Kailua is scheduled for Oct. 18. The monthly program is designed to rally support for merchants and restaurants and to remind residents to shop, dine and buy local.
