On behalf of the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, the Rotary Club of South Hilo presented a $10,000 check to En Young, executive director of The Food Basket, Hawaii Island’s food bank, to help combat hunger in the Puna and Ka‘u districts.
“The Rotary Club of South Hilo feels very honored to have partnered with the Weinberg Friends Program, allowing our club to designate a charity to receive Weinberg support,” said Rotary President Kim Arakawa. “Caring for our community through good works is a cornerstone of what Rotary is all about. Our club members are so grateful to be able to be a part of helping ensure our families, kupuna and keiki are not only fed, but also nourished.”
The donation will go toward several community food drops in Ka‘u and Puna that will include a variety of perishable and nonperishable items, including foods from the USDA, seasonal produce and a selection of nonperishable items from The Food Basket’s inventory.
“The Food Basket is really trying to expand our offerings and it is donations like this that will make sure that we can develop and maintain our high quality of service to the community,” Young said.
While the specific dates, and location have not been finalized, The Food Basket expects the food drops will happen on Saturdays during early October.
