Rescuers from the Army’s Pohakuloa Training Area found a lost hiker Sunday night on Mauna Loa.

According to a Fire Department statement, the man, a 42-year-old Japanese national, became lost while hiking on the mountain’s Mauna Loa Observatory Trail.

The man was found about a mile-and-a-half above the observatory. He had been hiking all day in heavy rains, strong winds and temperatures in the lower 50s.

He was taken to Hilo Medical Center suffering from exhaustion and hypothermia. There was no word on his condition.
