Hawaii Community College’s Office of Continuing Education and Training is partnering with the county of Hawaii and the Hawaii State Executive Office on Aging to offer “Caregiving 101: A Series for Those Who Care for Older Adults.”
The classes are from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 25, Oct. 2, 23, 30 and Nov. 6 and 20 at the Hawaii County Office of Aging Training Room. Tuition for the series is $69.
Presenter Dr. Michael Cheang will provide participants with a realistic picture of aging over six interactive workshops. Cheang is an associate professor at the Family and Consumer Sciences Department at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Estee Nathanson, OCET educational specialist, said Cheang will discuss important concepts such as normal aging versus successful aging; significance and benefits of primary prevention; aging in place; dementia care; shared decision making; and end of life care.
Those who could benefit from this training include elder care aides, adult day care assistants, meals-on-wheels workers, certified nurse aides, chore workers and hospice volunteers.
“We have many families in our community who anticipate caring for their older parents who would benefit from this series,” Nathanson said.
The program is funded in part by the county of Hawaii and Title III of the Older Americans Act through the Hawaii State Executive Office on Aging. Financial aid is available through the Workforce Development Division, Employment and Training Fund Program.
